Pick Totally Lean if
You want to sketch a business model tonight, without a signup flow between you and the canvas.
Pick Strategyzer if
You specifically need the Business Model Canvas framework (not the Lean Canvas).

Why this comparison exists

This is the comparison most often made on the wrong premise. Strategyzer is the canonical Business Model Canvas tool, built by Alexander Osterwalder; Totally Lean implements Ash Maurya's Lean Canvas, which is structurally different. Founders search this comparison because both are well-known canvas tools, but the right answer often isn't to pick one — it's to know which framework you actually need. The Lean Canvas drops Key Partners and Key Activities and adds Problem and Unfair Advantage; it's tuned for early-stage startups with no validated customers yet. The Business Model Canvas keeps the partnership and operations boxes; it's tuned for established businesses describing how they work today. This page makes the framework distinction the headline, then compares pricing, audience, and AI workflow honestly within that constraint.

How they handle your data

Strategyzer is enterprise software. Canvas data lives on Strategyzer's cloud and is governed by enterprise contracts that include role-based permissions, audit trails, and SOC 2 compliance evidence available under NDA. For organizations with security review processes, that's a feature, not a friction. For solo founders running a side project, it's overhead. Totally Lean has no compliance program because there is no infrastructure to comply with: data lives on the device of whoever opened the canvas. The comparison is not enterprise-cloud versus consumer-cloud — it's enterprise-cloud versus no-cloud. If a CISO needs to sign off, Strategyzer is the right answer. If you're sketching a pre-incorporation idea on a Sunday night, the right answer is something simpler.

AI: what edits, what drafts

Strategyzer's AI features sit inside its Business Model Canvas product and focus on enterprise innovation use cases — generating value-proposition statements, surfacing competitive insights, and suggesting customer-segment hypotheses based on the rest of the canvas. The AI is positioned as part of an innovation methodology, not a writing aid. Totally Lean's AI is narrower and lower-stakes: edit one sticky in one of four styles, generate a 90-second pitch from the whole canvas, run a section polish over Problem or Solution, or chat with one of three agents (Onboarding, Explorer, Critic) about your assumptions. The agents don't write stickies — they ask questions and let you decide. Different audiences, different workflows: Strategyzer's AI augments a coached innovation process; ours sharpens an individual founder's writing. If you have a corporate innovation team running a Lean Startup program, Strategyzer's tooling is built for you; if you're alone at midnight with an idea, ours is.

When to pick which

Pick Totally Lean if…

  • You want to sketch a business model tonight, without a signup flow between you and the canvas.
  • Your early hypotheses shouldn't sit on a third party's server.
  • You want AI help on your canvas — but the AI should edit what you wrote, not write for you.
  • You share canvases with people who shouldn't have to install or sign up for anything.
  • You want the Sankey flow, threads, and weighted validation without paying.

Pick Strategyzer if…

  • You specifically need the Business Model Canvas framework (not the Lean Canvas).
  • You're at an enterprise or large team and need permission roles, portfolio views, and organizational reporting.
  • You want bundled methodology content, not just a canvas editor.
  • Your budget supports an enterprise license.
